Participants of this online webinar explored the major concepts involved in teaching comprehension skills to younger children. It linked the webinar’s content to specific elements in both the Australian and New Zealand curricula.
The program looked closely at: visual literacy (how words and pictures work together to make meaning), connecting students’ own experiences to themes in a text, making predictions before, during and at the conclusion of a text, retelling key events, recognising specific features of plot, character and setting in imaginative texts, identifying common underlying themes in stories and inferring details about a text’s content.
The presenter offered a range of practical activities - a total of 24 classroom lesson plans designed to achieve better comprehension skill outcomes.
